Note: Table fields are categorised as High, Medium and low, the “likely hood” column is the considered likely hood of a dangerous event . The consequence being the effect of the event in terms of risk to an individual or property. Mitigation is the action the club has taken to minimise the identified risk.

Risk Likelyhood Consequence Mitigation
Injury to spectators from flying aircraft:
Over flying public areas L H
  • Site approved by BMFA for insurance purposes
  • BMFA Guidelines for display layouts followed
    • Any deviations assessed and documented
  • Any model type/size limitations to be documented
  • Site assessment made and site approved by three Committee members- “sign off” document must be used.
    • Particular consideration to be made of:
      • Different wind directions.
      • Depth perception.
      • Location of public, walkers, vehicles.
  • Public areas to defined by signage/barriers as appropriate
  • Walk around site to be undertaken during flying session to note any new problems not envisaged.
Loss of model control M H
  • Pilot briefing to be made at start of each day to inform of limits of flying area with particular consideration to flying style and wind direction. Modellers to inform
  • Frequency control method to be used and declared in “sign off”
  • Frequency monitoring to be employed
  • “A” “B” or “LMA” certified modellers only to fly. An “A” must be accompanied by a “B” certified flyer that will stand with them. The “B” certified modeller must be familiar with the model type flown and use the same transmitter mode. The “B” certified modeller is in control of the flight.
  • A flight line marshal who checks the general flying looks out for hazards etc must be present at all times.
  • Model structure, Battery condition, fuel level, engine tune and surface controls to be checked before every flight.
  • Models to be range checked at the start of their flying session.
  • No test flying or flying of previously un-flown models.
  • Display recommendation made by the BMFA to be followed (e.g. no aerobatic manoeuvres to end facing the flight or public display line, segregation distances).
  • Nearest modelling site identified and interference assessed. Any known informal sites should be considered
Personal Injury L H
  • To minimise the consequence of injury:
    • Location of any on site first aid post to be identified and sign posted*. This to be checked on the day.
    • Location of the site to be identified (e.g. post code, road) and posted.
    • First aid kit to be available.
    • Location of neared A&I hospital to be identified and posted

E.g. Notice in a car window detailed in the pilot briefing
